Fokuangshan MonasteryIn Taiwan

Fokuangshan Monastery is considered as the largest Buddhist Monastery in Taiwan. It was established in 1967 by Hsing Yun. The organization that runs this monastery, along with Tzu-Chi is one of the popular charity organizations of the world.

Humanistic Buddhism is mainly preached in this monastery. The perceptions of Buddhism are the main aspect that is dealt in. Outsiders are heartily welcomed in Fokuangshan Monastery.

Previously it was a part of the Lin-chi school of Buddhism. But in recent times, Fokuangshan serves as the headquarters and has its monasteries spread across countries from San Francisco, Berlin to Bangkok. But in the year 1997, public were not allowed to enter into its premises. But then it was again opened to the public from 2000.

A major feature of this monastery is that it has the provision of providing cheap accommodation facilities to those travelers who are voluntarily dedicate them self into some work. The volunteers who are foreigners are expected to work for half a day and are kept in a dormitory that has an accommodation of eight.

This monastery also provides meditation procedures and facilities to the commoners all through the year. These meditation retreats are done three to four times in a year. The Amitabha Chanting Retreat is usually held at the beginning of the month. The Buddhist images present in the monastery are undoubtedly beautiful and tourists’ from all over the world come to visit it.
