Green Island Taiwan

A tiny volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, Green Island is the fourth-largest island in the Republic of China. Green Island lies not further than 33 km from the eastern coast of Taiwan.

Green Island may be reached in 10-12 minutes by air from Taitung City. There is also a regular traffic of ferries to the island.

Green Island, Taiwan: History

Green Island was originally a settlement of the Ami Taiwanese aborigines. The island was known to these people as Sanasai. Formerly known as the ‘Fire-Burned Island’, Green Island got its present name on August 1, 1949.

Green Island is known as a place of prisons. In the past the prison cells in Green Island have housed many political prisoners as hardened criminals.

Green Island is a fascinating tourist place with white beaches, magnificent coral reefs, rich flora and fauna and steep sea side cliffs. The best apart about the island is that due to its size, the tourist places are situated not very far from each other.

The local tour operators organize snorkeling tours which are quite popular among the visitors.

The water life of Green Island is famous for its sheer variety. There are glass-bottom boats available for those not to keen on wetting their bodies.

The Zhaori Hot Spring, located on the southeastern part of Green Island is a fun place to soak oneself in the sulphur water. Hot springs are known for their medicinal values.
