Keelung Peace Island, Taiwan is a rocky island in the Chung Cheng District in Keelung. It covers an area of mere 66 hectares. Originally called She-liau Island, Keelung Peace Island is located only 4 km from Keelung city center. The rock terrain that makes up most of Keelung Peace Island imparts a unique topography to the island. The acknowledgment of such uniqueness has come in the form of the island being declared a national park. Keelung Peace Island stands at the opening of Keelung Harbor which, in spite of its tiny size, is the second largest harbor in Taiwan. The strategic location of Keelung Harbor- for trading as well as military purposes- explains the reason for numerous feuds over it between the warring countries in the past. Due to years of relentless erosion by the surrounding ocean, the Keelung Peace Island has been reduced to a bare body of rocks. The rocks, as if in rapture of their own sparseness, have stretched out to form varying shapes. Some of the rocks on the northern coast of the island bear strong resemblance to human heads, as a result the place is also called ‘Crowd of a Thousand Heads Cave’. Also located in Keelung Peace Island is a 20-meter deep cave, which was apparently used by the Dutch during the war. The walls have writings inscribed on them.
