National Palace Museum Taiwan

Located in Taipei City in Taiwan, National Palace Museum is both an art gallery and a museum. The Museum is believed to house the largest collection of Chinese artifacts and artwork in the world.

National Palace Museum, Taiwan: History

Beijing was the place where the National Palace Museum was first established in October, 1925. This was not very long after Puyi, the last emperor of China, had been unseated from the throne.

The collection in the newly opened museum included many valuables belonging to the Chinese royalty. Thus during the tumultuous years between 1930 and 1940, the valuables were shifted from one place to another in order to prevent them from falling into the hands of the advancing Japanese Army.

Towards the end of the Chinese Civil Wars, under Chiang Kai-shek’s bidding, the collection was finally transferred to Taiwan. The transfer stirred up lot of uproar since many nationalists in China deemed the act as no different from looting.

National Palace Museum: Most Valued Artifacts

Carved Olive-stone Boat- The boat is merely 1.6 cm tall and 3.4 cm long, yet the boat houses eight figures with distinct features. The most amazing aspect of the boat is the inscription of entire text of Su Shih's "Latter Ode on the Red Cliff".

Jade Cabbage- This brilliant piece of art speaks volumes about its creator. Jade has been skillfully carved to resemble cabbage.

The other famous artifact is the "Painting of One Hundred Horses".
