Shin Kong Life Tower is located in Zhong-Zhen District, in Taipei city. It was the tallest city in Taiwan until it was surpassed by Tuntex Sky Tower in 1997. Designed by the architect, Kaku Morin, Shin Kong Life Tower has 51 floors and at the height of 803 ft. There is a golden Shin Kong logo staring out from the 10th floor. The work for the construction of the high-rise started in 1989 and reached completion in December 1993. Shin Kong Life Tower boasts of impeccable safety features. Soon after it was founded, the building underwent tests at Center for Earthquake Engineering Research at National Taiwan University. Shin Kong Life Tower houses the largest branch of Taipei’s three Mitsukoshi department stores on the 1-13 floors. A public observatory is located on the 46th floor and a restaurant on the 44th floor. Shin Kong Life Insurance and Co. occupies the rest of the building. The 46th floor on which the Shin Kong Life Tower’s observatory is located can be reached in 30 seconds by lift and it provides a panoramic view of the city. Though Shin Kong Life Tower is counted as one of the major landmarks in Taipei city, it has its own share of detractors among the fraternity of architects. Most common of the criticisms has been that the building lacks creativity and flair.
