The South Cross Island Highway connects Tainan City, in Taiwan’s Southwest, with Taitung, in Taiwan’s East. More commonly known as Taiwan Highway 20, South Cross Island Highway extends to 209 km. Although under the mercy of the temperamental landslides during the rainy season, South Cross Island Highway is a major tourist destination. South Cross Island Highway seems to corroborate the adage- ‘it is journey that matters, not the destination’. The Highway promises a journey fraught with sights of razor sharp ravines, deep valleys of rice fields, emblazoned rice farms, Aboriginal districts and few non-descript industrialized suburbs. The ride through South Cross Island Highway may be covered in over eight hours, but such a journey would be a flagrant injustice to the beauty promised by the journey. An ideal ride through South Cross Island Highway should a undertaken without any anxious glances at Haste and an overnight halt at Inland of Jiashian will be a well advised move. Jiashian is a pleasant town famous for its taro products, it is only located only an hour’s drive away from Tainan. South Cross Island Highway includes an area which falls under Yushan National Park. The drive brings into view the some of the animals inhabiting the Park. The highest point in South Cross Island Highway is Yakou Tunnel, it promises a vantage point of 2, 731 meters above sea level. South Cross Island Highway is plied by many tourist buses, cars, trucks etc. and not surprisingly, the traffic is not the smoothest in most places. South Cross Island Highway is most recommended if leisure beckons.
