Lying in the scenic Zhangus County, Tianhou Temple is held to be one of the most sacred of the Mazu Temples in Taiwan. Tianhou Temple, Taiwan: History When founded in 1685, Tianhou Temple was known by the name Xinghua Maxu Temple, because a Fujiangese of Xinghua County had played a principal part in the establishment of the temple. The funds for the construction of the temple came chiefly through donations. Tainhou Temple, Taiwan: A Closer Look Even though the withering Time- strengthened by heaps of centuries- has more than challenged the majestic existence of the temple, Tianhou Temple continues to be an imposing structure with grand halls and lofty buildings. A tall memorial archway stands faces the front of Tainhou Temple. The archway’s pillars stand ornamented with many dragons and lead to the temple gate. The walls of the archway communicate with vivid paintings of historical stories. The makers of Tainhou Temple have divided it into two distinct divisions. Each part has a statue of Mazu enshrined in it. Giving company to the statue Mazu are statues of Farsighted God and Well-Informed God of wood sculpture. The statues bear distinct expressions and are works of great ingenuity. Tainhou Temple is held in high veneration by the people. Every year on the birth anniversary of Mazu, which falls on March 23 of the lunar calendar, Tainhou Temple is deluged by the ocean of devotees.
