Taiwan is a land of rich culture and heritage. Visiting Taiwan thus necessarily brings in the question of knowing about the cultural aspects of Taiwan. In this respect there are certain things that should be kept in mind and is especially applicable for the tourists’ visiting Taiwan.

Taiwanese are noted to be friendly and helpful but they have a strong superstitious believes about dying. Hence unlucky things are not to be mentioned before them. The names in Chinese should not be written in red as it denotes an evil omen. Whistling at night and pointing out at cemeteries are considered as invitation to ghosts; hence it should be strongly avoided.

There are certain objects that the Taiwanese never share with others because of their strong superstitious mentalities. Umbrellas sounds the same in Taiwanese as “break up”, hence it is never given to any friend or love ones. Even if it is given, a minimal amount of money is taken. Similarly clocks should not be given to anyone and even shoes should never be gifted especially to the elders. Knives and sharp equipments are also avoided as it may hurt someone.

Heavy drinking should be avoided as this land does not have the culture of drinking. The Taiwanese would never consider you as a respectful person if you drink heavily. When entering someone’s house, please remove your shoes and wear a pair of plastic sandals provided by the hosts. In the southern region of Taiwan, especially in the crowded places, physical contact of any sort should be strongly avoided. A tip should never be given in restaurants, hotels and any of the eating places.

While enjoying at a hotel or restaurant, the chopsticks should never be made to stand in an erect manner from your bowl or eating dishes. This symbolizes death for the others around you. Hence the sticks should be kept on the provided dish or the top of the bowl.

Manners and behaviors area a carrier of the culture of your country and gives an impression of your motherland in an alien place. Similarly you should also respect the ethics of the land you visit and be careful not to violate the norms and culture of that place.
