Holy Rosary Church

Though Thailand is predominantly a Buddhist country there is also the traces of Christianity in this country. This reflects the religious harmony of Thailand. Christianity started it journey with the advent of Portuguese traders in Bangkok in the year 1567. They set up the first Catholic Church in the then capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya. During 1662 French missionaries came to Bangkok. They had immense authority upon the Catholic Church in Bangkok for next 200 years. The arrival of French missionaries resulted in a controversy with the Portuguese missionaries. The Portuguese missionaries quit from Santa Cruz Church and established Holy Rosary Church in 1786 at Samhanthawong of Bangkok. King Rama I granted the land for building Holy Rosary Church.

Holy Rosary Church in Bangkok is known as Kalawar Church among the local people. The word Kalawar is derived as a broken word from Calvary. Calvary is the place near Jerusalem where crucifixion of Jesus Christ had been done. Holy Rosary Church has a wonderful architecture of Neo- Gothic style. There are colored stained glasses inside the church which tell the story of the New and Old Testament. The condition of the glasses is still very good. It reflects the care taken by the church authority. Holy Rosary Church is one of the old 67 churches in Bangkok.
