Built in 1783, Phra Sumeru Fortress, Bangkok is situated on the meeting points of Phra Athit Road and Phra Sumeru Road. Phra Sumeru Fortress is also referred to as Phra Sumen. This majestic fortress was built during the rule of King Rama I. To construct Phra Sumeru Fortress in Bangkok King Rama I recruited approximately 5000 Vientiene people. It is said that with Phra Sumeru Fortress, 14 other fortresses and battlements in surrounding, were created in the capital. Phra Sumen or say Phra Sumeru Fortress boasts of octagonal shape. This octagonal shaped architecture has three levels. The walls of this fortress have steps which lead up to the fortress. Inside the fortress 38 rooms are there. These rooms primarily houses ammunition and weapon. It is said that the roof of this fortress fell down during the rule of King Rama IV or V. However, in the early 1980's, Department of Fine Art undertook the charge of its restoration and used the old photographs of this brilliant fortress to give it its previous look. This octagonal shaped architecture has a small park in its surrounding region. While visiting Phra Sumeru Fortress, Bangkok (Thailand) one can take a pleasure walk along the beautiful river to Phra Pinklao Bridge.
