Founded in 1900, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Wat Benchamabophit (The Marble Temple), Bangkok is a revered temple in Bangkok with a considerable amount of religious importance attached to it. The temple gets its name from the Carrara marble that has been used in its construction. When translated, “Wat Benchamabophit” means the temple of the Fifth King. Wat Benchamabophit (The Marble Temple), Bangkok is a wonderfully maintained temple and this is the first thing that will strike you even at a first glance at it. The Ubosoth Hall is the chief and the imposing structure that exemplifies the finest works of architectural art of the period. The hindquarters of the Ubosoth features a gallery that has 52 enshrined images of Buddha. A close look at the images might as well be a lesson in Buddha image iconography. The main Buddha image is housed within the Ubosoth. It is a bronze Buddha with a curious halo of blue light around it. The ashes of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) are entombed beneath the throne of Buddha. A walk around the Ubosoth will help you to appreciate the exquisite and intricate embellishments that grace the windows and the gables. Other structures within the temple compound like the Song Dharm Hall, Song Phanuat Hall and the Bovornvong Bell Tower are interconnected by pleasant walkways. Don't miss a stroll through the bright and colorful monk quarters.
