Wat Suthat

King Rama I of Chakri dynasty started building the famous Thai temple Wat Suthat. But the work remained incomplete till it was finished in the hands of King Rama III. Wat Suthat is one of the ancient temples in Bangkok. Wat Suthat consists of a large 25 feet high statue of Buddha called Phra Sri Sakyamuni Buddha statue. The statue was brought by the boat. Wiharan is the place where the Buddha statue is enshrined. This place is surrounded by long walls. On the outer wall there are almost 150 Buddha images. Within the territory of the temple there are various Chinese statues It is believed these statues were brought from China to Bangkok during the period of King Rama I as a strong support for the ships. The wall is decorated with murals of the last 24 lives of Lord Buddha. The pillars have also mural painting that portray the early days of Bangkok.

The doors of the Wat Suthat temple are significant as it is believed that some of them are decorated by the King himself. These doors are gold plated and painted. In the front side of the temple there is a swing called Sao Ching Chaa. It is a giant swing with a Chinese red frame. During the annual festival men tried to capture the gold bag by swinging but it cause lots of human death. It was censored in 1940s.
