Establishment of Tribal Museum Chiang Mai

Tribal Museum Chiang Mai Thailand was set up in 1965. The museum has recently shifted from Chiang Mai University campus to a new site at the pretty Rama IX Park (Rajamangkala Park), Chiang Mai. The Department of Public Welfare, which is a part of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare of Thailand, is responsible for establishing the Chiang Mai Tribal Museum.

At the Tribal Museum Chiang Mai you can see various costumes, tools, unusual accessories, utensils, jewelry, musical instruments and artifacts of the major hill tribes like the Hmong, Karen, Akkha, Lisu, Lahu and Mien. You will also hear many stories about how these hill tribes settled here.

Tribal Museum, Chiang Mai also hosts a slide show, which is shown everyday when the museum is open. The slide show helps you to understand the unique culture and habits of hill tribes. The show timings are 10 am and 2 pm.

The exhibits at the Tribal Museum, Chiang Mai include photographs of models who are dressed in complete traditional costumes and are doing the daily chores such are farming and eating food. The collection at this museum has been arranged as per certain themes such as housing, religious beliefs, fishing, musical instruments and agriculture. The exhibits are inclusive of baskets, hunting traps and weapons, ceremonial stringed and wind instruments, intricate silver jewelry, drums, colorful costumes and farming implements

The Tribal Museum, Chiang Mai is open from Monday to Friday. The visiting hours of the museum are from nine in the morning to four in the evening. You can also go on group tours on weekends but you will have to book your tour in advance.
