Chiang Mai does not experience too many variations between day and night time temperatures. Given its higher elevation, the city's weather can be quite unpredictable at times.
Chiang Mai's climate can be clearly divided into three seasons - hot, rainy and cool. Summers in Chiang Mai begin at the end of March and go on till the end of May. During this period, temperatures range between 17ºC and 36ºC. During the daytime, the average temperature lurks somewhere around the 30º Celsius mark. April is the hottest month in Chiang Mai.
By the end of March, the conditions are extremely hot and dry. The surrounding valley is enveloped by a haze that tends to collect in the air at this time. Sometimes, short and violent storms bring in winds and rains that provide a relief from the dryness.
In Chiang Mai, the rainy season lasts between June and October. In this season, the average daytime temperature is about 25ºC, with September being the wettest month.
During this season, the weather in Chiang Mai becomes quite irregular. Days that start as bright and sunny, darken in no time as heavy clouds gather over mountains. The afternoons experience short and intense rainstorms that get cleared by the evening. When Chiang Mai is hit by tropical storms, you can expect sustained rains for long periods.
The period from November to February is the cool season in Chiang Mai. Temperatures are slightly low at nighttime. At higher altitudes, temperatures even drop to near freezing levels.
