Geography of Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is the largest and most significant city in the northern area of Thailand. Located 700 kilometers from Bangkok, the geography of Chiang Mai is quite noteworthy. The Chiang Mai province covers up a region of 20,000 square kilometers. Chiang Mai has 22 districts. The valley of Chiang Mai is located on the coast of the river Ping and is situated 310 meters over sea level.

Chiang Mai is surrounded in the east by Chiang Rai, Lamphun, and Lampang and Mae Hong in the west. This is surrounded by monumental walls which are made in the year 1800. This area consists of valleys and hills and forests. Around 70.8 percent of Chiang Mai is forest land. 10.6 percent of the land is sued for agriculture uses. Chiang Mai is above all a rocky and hilly terrain and hence comprises of many tributaries and streams like Mae Jam, Mae Klang and Mae Ngud. The water from these tributaries is used for irrigation purposes.

Ping River is known to be the support system of Chiang Mai. This is the most important river in this area. It plays a vital role in influencing the geography of Chiang Mai in a positive way. The river has its sources in the Chiang Dao Mountain. The Chiang Mai geography is beautiful and it is the home of the Inthanon Mountain (2,575 meters).
