Visakha Bucha Festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. This festival falls on the full moon of the sixth lunar month.
As per history, the time of birth and death of Gautam Buddha are uncertain. However, his lifetime is dated between 563 BC and 483 BC. Also known as 'Sakyamuni', Buddha is credited to have founded a whole-new religion called Buddhism. Visakha Bucha Festival also commemorates the day when Buddha attained enlightenment. This happened when Buddha discovered the Middle Way - a new path of moderation, away from self-indulgence and self-mortification.
According to historians, this day came somewhere in the month of May, when he was 35 years old. Ever since then, he came to be known as the 'awakened one'. He is said to have discovered the main cause of people's suffering, and the subsequent solutions to them.
