This Chiang Mai festival begins on the day the moon commences to wane in the sixth lunar month, and continues for six days. The City Pillar Inthakhin Festival is celebrated to pay respects to the Inthakhin Pillar, which is popularly known as City Pillar.
This early festival is mainly Tai-Indic in origin and is recognized to be the cause for the rain and prosperity among people. The symbol of the festival of Chiang Mai commencing is the procession of the Phra Fon Saen Ha Buddha image around Chiang Mai's streets. One will catch many devotees who have come to participate in one of the integral events of Chiang Mai.
According to the local beliefs, the procession ceremony of City Pillar Inthakhin Festival brings in happiness, peace and prosperity to Chiang Mai. Devotees consider the image on City Pillar is the abode of a guardian spirit which takes care of the city. During the festival, this image is bathed in perfumed water which is used for sacred reasons in the hope that it will bring in more rains. The procession starts from Tha Pae Gate, and stops at Wat Chedi Luang. This gate is the customary route of admission to Chiang Mai, from the Ping River, and all along the road which show the way to the City Pillar.In the evenings, the majority of the spiritual activities are held at the Wat Chedi Luang.
People meet at this place to make offerings to the City Pillar. The temple is congested at the time of the festival with many devotees who line up to get a quick look of the Pillar. The offerings at the time of the City Pillar Inthakhin Festival include flowers, candles, and incense.On the final day of the City Pillar Inthakhin Festival, the parade encircles the Khu Muang (moat) by observing the rituals of Thamboon Muang about all four curve and gates of the old city wall.
