There is a famous legend behind the making of Wat Phra Borommathat Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai. It is said that a fake Buddha relic was placed on the back of an elephant. The elephant was allowed to roam where-ever it wanted the elephant climbed to the top of Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai trumpeted three times, turned around three times, knelt down and died.
King Ku Na built the chedi in the 14th century on the very place where the elephant died. The temple Wat Phra Borommathat Doi Suthep, has been expanding ever since it was first set up. The temple rests at the height of 3,520 feet above sea level.
Tourists can easily reach Wat Phra Borommathat Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai by using public transport to travel the road 16 kilometers to reach Doi Suthep. Tourists then have to walk about two hundred stepson the Naga stairway. If you don't like walking then you can also opt for hiring a small tram to the temple.
