Almost 8 % of Thailand's population consists of Hill Tribes and each of them adds its own color and distinctive culture to the majority Thai society of Thailand.
Here's an introduction to Thailand's hill tribes:
Akha:
They celebrate most major festivals in the open grounds or commons. Women wear black caps covered with silver coins.
Karens ( Kariang, Yang)
The largest of the hill tribes, they live in the foot-hills. Women wear white blouse-sarong combinations, with their hair covered by a white scarf.
Lahu ( Musor)
Skilled in hunting and herbal medicine lore, they enjoy entertainment. Women dress colorfully in turbans and silver earrings.
Lisu ( Lisaw)
These handsome people are the - engineers - among Thailand's Hill Tribes. Villages boasts a bamboo pipe to carry water and other interesting features.
Meo :
Second largest of the hill tribe groups, they worship the sky spirit and have a strict gender division of labor. Their house-fronts slope downwards distinctively.
Yao:
Skilled silversmiths and embroiderers, they originated from China and have their own written script. Their art is prized by art collectors.
You can go trekking up the hills on a visit to these fascinating hill tribes and be exposed to their cultures! A trek group typically comprises 4 -20 trekkers, a cook, two guides, transportation, accommodation, meals and a hike of 4 to 10 days.
