Buddha's Birthday is a major festival of Ko Samui. Held every year in the month of May, this festival is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of the great saint Buddha. Buddha's Birthday is known as Vesak or Visakah Puja. The celebration is named after a month in the Indian calendar. The festival is held in the month of May. It is celebrated on the first full moon day of May. During the leap year, the festival is held in the month of June. This festival is celebrated in order to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and the death of the great saint Buddha. It is an extremely important festival of the Thai people. A lot of preparations are made in order to celebrate this gala event. The Buddhist monasteries are all decorated with flowers and bright lights. Special prayers are organized and sermons are held, where the life and teachings of Buddha are discussed. Buddha's Birthday, Ko Samui is observed on the 15 th May. On this day processions are held all across the island. A candle lit procession is also held over here every year. These processions are usually held around the local temples. People walk in this procession with three incense sticks, flowers and a lighted candle. One is expected to walk three times in a clockwise direction around the chapel of the temple. Thereafter, the people listen to the sermons delivered by the monks. On this day schools, colleges and offices remains closed, as it is a public holiday.
