In the year 1980, Mu Koh Angthong was established as a national park. It comprises of 42 islands featuring lime stone massifs, tropical rainforests and secluded beaches. Among the islands, Koh Wua Talap (island of the sleeping cow) is the largest. There is a nice beach with white sand named Ao Kha at Angthong National Marine Park in Ko Samui. There is also a small national park office and a camping site here. Situated on the north of the park are the scenic beach Ko Mae Ko and the 7-meter deep emerald saltwater lake Talay Nai. There are two beaches here, Ao Na Thap and Ao Tham Rang, which are ideal for swimming. There is a considerable amount of wildlife inhabiting the Angthong National Marine Park in Ko Samui including the Asian long-tailed monkey (langur), hair-nosed otters, pacific reef egrets, white-bellied sea eagles, ashy drongos, tortoises, sea turtles, lizards and pythons. The surrounding sea is also the major breeding ground for the short-bodied mackerel, a scrumptious Thai delicacy. Also known as the Golden Basin , Angthong National Marine Park in Ko Samui is renowned for activities like snorkeling, walking and swimming. You can also visit nearby islands like Ko Sam Sao, Ko Prayad, Ko Hin Dap and Ko Kha. The ideal time to visit the park is between late March and October.
