Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks

The culture of a civilization is often made even more interesting with the various folklore and legends that surround it. They also throw light on the history as well as heritage of the civilization, more so when they are accompanied by archeological or architectural proof. Exhibiting these characteristics are two ancient rocks located in the beautiful province of Ko Samui or Koh Samui as it is also known in Thailand. These are the Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks (Hin Yai/Hin Ta), Ko Samui, one of the most important tourist attractions of Ko Samui.

Located on the southern portion of the picturesque Lamai Beach, situated on the eastern portion of the island of Ko Samui, the second longest beach in the entirety of the province are the two rock formations Hin Yai and Hin Ta, which are popularly known as Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks in the tourist jargon, used in Ko Samui.

Shaped suggestively and bearing resemblance to the male and female genital organs, these twin rocks draw to themselves thousands of tourists on a trip to Ko Samui each day. Perhaps an even bigger attraction than the rocks themselves are the several stories that are linked to them which throw light on the history of Thailand as well as showcase the culture of the Thais to the visitors traveling to this beautiful land.
