History of Krabi

History of Krabi is as old as the history of humans. The traces of the first humans on the island were estimated back to 25,000 - 35,000 B.C, thought the historians claim that the proper civilization embarked on the island from the kingdom of Ligor in 1200 B.C. during this period the city of Ban Thai Samor was a pet of the kingdom.

The recent history suggests that Krabi was administered from Nakhon Si Thammarat till 1872. The rule continued even after king Chulalongkorn gave Krabi the status of a town. Things take take a turn when in 1875 Krabi was incorporated in the administration of Bangkok and the town was made a direct subordinate of Bangkok. This development paved the way for Krabi in becoming an independent province and gave birth to the present day Krabi province. In 1900 the governor of the province shifted the center of province form Ban Tadal Kao to the present location at the mouth of the Krabi River.

The archeological evidences suggests that Krabi was a province since the prehistoric times but the absence of any document mean that the history be counted from the time of the Ligor Kingdom.

The meaning of the name of Krabi has confused the historians a bit. There are two legends prevailing, which have led to all the confusion. The first one suggests that the villagers presented one sword discovered during excavation to the governor, which is called Krabi in Thai has led to the nomenclature. The other one suggests that the name was derived fro m the local tree ‘Lumphi'. The trades man in the region from Malay and China distorted the pronunciation of the word and it gradually developed from "Ka-lu-bi" or "Kho-lo-bi" and finally to ‘Krabi'.
