Pattaya Elephant Village started operating in 1973 as a sanctuary for the elephants that were not in working condition any more. These huge mammoths, through reasons of injury or ill health could no longer be used as a part of the backbone of heavy work in the jungles of Thailand but it was also needed to ensure a safe haven for them. It is from there that the idea of an Elephant Village came into being. Because of their diminishing habitat, it was also not possible to make them return to the wild. A visit to the Elephant Village is a unique experience. The fees paid by the visitors contribute to the very survival of the elephants.
