In recent times, windsurfing has become one of the most popular water sports
in Phuket and can be practiced in 8 of the 16 beaches on the west coast of the
island. Of these, the Patong Beach, Bang Tao Beach and Kata Beach are the most
popular for windsurfing.
Windsurfing is a sport that requires skill and agility apart from mental and
physical strength. The dry season from November to May is considered the ideal
time for windsurfing in Phuket because during this time the wind is steady and
the sea remains calm. Every year, Phuket holds the Phuket international surfing
contest in mid-September. People are advised to refrain from Windsurfing in
Phuket during mid-May to end of October when the southwestern monsoon blows
from India across the Andaman Sea, creating heavy seas.
Windsurfing equipments can be rented from famous resorts or local shops on
the beaches. Boards may be rented by the hour, half-day, full-day or a week.
Training sessions for beginners are also available at Phuket's beaches. Patong
Beach has many windsurfing shops at the beachfront with some of them offering
excellent services.
Windsurfing in Phuket promises to be an extremely thrilling experience for windsurfing
enthusiasts as well as for beginners.
