The largest island in Thailand, the most populous and the most popular one- Phuket is a major watershed in the tourism industry of Thailand. And festivals and events in Phuket are more than you can even think of. In this cosmopolitan island there are festivals for every faith, every religion every race, and every kind of tourist for that matter. The Songkran festival celebrates the advent of the Thai New Year. This festival is celebrated in April. The Songkran Festival has come up as Thailand's signature event with people from all over the world pouring in at this time of the year. The festival began as a modest Buddhist event where monks blessed people for the New Year by sprinkling water on the people as a sign of blessing. Over time, the festival has assumed a more lively and boisterous tone and is now a national water fight. n the day of Songkran Festival the whole country wields buckets of ice water, water balloons, water pistols, super soakers and the like at each other. If you are dying to get soaked, all you need to do is step out of your hotel doors into the street. But do remember to lock your car doors if you're driving through town because no one is exempt from this raucous celebration.
