History of Phuket
Thailand - Bangkok - Chiang Mai - Koh Samui Island - Krabi - Pattaya - Phuket
The island's convenient location as well as her natural treasures made Phuket one of the most coveted territories in the world, which led to the Burmese Invasion of 1785, arguably one of the most important events in the history of Phuket. It was largely due to the efforts of two women, Khunying Jan and her sister Mook, who managed to assemble a large army of locals that the credit for defeating the invaders went to. In an effort to demonstrate a nation's gratitude the two women the honorary titles Thao Thep Kasatri and Thao Sri Sunthon from King Rama I, the then ruler of Phuket.
Gradually, the history of Phuket saw the advent of industrialization and modernization as Phuket earned a name for herself as one of the premier tin producing nations in the world. It was in 1933, that Phuket became a province by herself.
Unfortunately the next event in the history of Phuket was destined to be one of the darkest events in the recent history of the world. The tropical paradise suffered extensive damage when a tsunami caused by an earthquake on the Indian Ocean struck the western coast of Thailand on 26th December 2004, changing the history of Phuket forever. However, the people of Phuket refuse to bow down to adversities and have strived on to regain much of their lifestyles as they were before the tsunami.
