Situated about 20 km south of Phuket, the Racha Islands in Phuket , Thailand consist of two islands, Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi. In Thai language, Yai means big and Noi means little.
Closest to Phuket is Racha Yai, an island mainly occupied by Muslim farmers and fishermen. The main beach on the northwest coast of Koh Racha Yai in Phuket is Ao Tawan Tok (also known as Ao Bungalow), located in a u-shaped bay . Decked with snow white sand, this beach has the consistency of talcum powder. On the east coast is a bay that is fine for diving even during rainy season.
You can also visit Racha Noi, located a little to the south of Koh Racha Yai in Phuket. This uninhabited island has more rocks than beaches. There is a small bay on its west coast that is ideal for fishing. The main activities here are scuba diving and snorkeling.
Like many islands in the area, Koh Racha Yai in Phuket is popular with day- excursionists from Phuket. Hence, Ao Bungalow gets a little busy in the afternoon. The night is the perfect time for star-gazing on the beach , when the island remains calm with only a few restaurants and bars.
