Golden Triangle is one of Asia's primary opium producing areas covering a net area of 350,000square kilometers. The Golden Triangle in Thailand has many attractive towns and villages on the fringes that have now become popular tourist destinations in their own rights. The town of Mai Sai and Sop Ruak are The Grand Palace, Bangkok was both the official residence of the King of Thailand and the seat of all the administrative practices of the Government till the mid 20th century. After King Ananda Mahidol died in the Baromphiman Palace, King Bhumibol shifted the royal residence to the Chitralada Palace. Though they have shifted the Grand Palace continues to be as grand as ever and it has remained to be the seat of spirituality and power of Thailand.
The attractions within the Grand Palace
The palace complex has been built along the similar lines of the Ayutthaya palaces in the Ratanakosin Island. The main parts of the Grand Palace are the-
Grand Palace Hall or the Chakri Maha Prasat- this is a large European style reception room. This building is not used since the mystifying death of King Rama VIII.
Amarinda Hall was the Hall of Justice and it was also the actual residence of King Rama. Now it is mainly used for the royal ceremonial purposes. It also contains the antique throne that was used originally.
The Museum bears all the information about the restoration of the Grand Palace and also has the scale replicas of the Wat, the Palace and innumerable Buddha images.
The Dusit Hall is absolutely impressive and it is considered to be an example of the finest architectural feats in the country.
The Grand Palace opens at 8:30 am and closes at 3:30 pm every day. Entry is free for the Thais but foreigners are charged 200 bahts.
