In early days New Year in Thailand was celebrated in the end of November and during the reign of king Rama V it took place on the 1st of April. As the days passed, this country adopted the worldwide practice of celebrating New Year on The 1st of January. Yet, the Thais who adhere to tradition still regard April to be the beginning of their new year and they celebrate it from 13th to 15th April

Features of the New Year's Day in Thailand:

Throwing of water is a major and auspicious part of the celebration of the New Year's Day in Thailand. People throw water at each other and get drenched. Originally, the pouring of a small amount of water on a person's hands on New Year was a mean to show respect but now it is mainly done for fun and enjoyment.

The New Year tradition also demands that the children must visit their parents and give them small gifts to show gratitude for the favors extended to them.

The people also visit the Thai temples or Wats to pray and give food to the monks. Also people consider it sacred to wash the Buddha images in the temples with perfumed water.

The Thais also perform charitable works on this day.

Building of sand pagodas is also a religious part of the ceremony.
