The Long Boat races in Thailand are one of those traditional rites that mark the last of the retreating Buddhist Rains. It usually takes place during the 11th or the 12th Lunar months in September or October. Long Boat race is a national sport and its origins can be traced back to the Ayutthaya about 600 years ago. Boat racing was then just a way of keeping the national defense forces mentally and physically fit. The boat races are held annually and there are no specific regions for it. But the pre-requisite remains that there has to be one major waterway passing through the provinces where the races take place. The racing boats are made from tree trunks that have been scooped out. These can accommodate a double row of 60 oarsmen. The dresses of these men are of the same color. The event is so very spectacular that it attracts a huge number of spectators both local and foreign. They all gather on the banks to see the races. At the end of it all there are various trophies and prizes given out to the winning team. The Long Boat races are held during this time of the year because the level of water lies at the highest point. Racing of this type is held nearly all over Thailand. The places where the Long Boat races take place are Angthong, PhichitPhisanuloke, Pathumthani, Surat Thani, Nan and Ayuttathaya.
