The country of Thailand is split into 75 provinces, which are again arranged into 5 major groups namely North, Northeast, Central, East and South. Bangkok, though a special administrative area is often included as the 76th province. Each Province has its individual Governor who is appointed by the Ministry of the Interior. The provinces are divided into 796 districts called "amphoe" and these are further subdivided into communes or "tambon" and villages or "muban". Yala The biggest province, by area, among these is Nakhon Ratchasima and the smallest is Samut Songkhram. Bangkok has the highest population as well as the highest population density while the provinces with lowest population and the lowest population density are Ranong and Songkhram respectively. The younger provinces are Sa Kaeo, Nongbua Lamphu and Amnat Charoen. Bangkok is formed by the merging of two provinces namely, Phra Nakhon and Thonburi. Thailand is planning to create yet another province in the year 2007.
