If you are Planning to travel to Tokyo, it is better to know the language of the city, as it will enable one to communicate with local the people of the country easily.

Japanese is the official Tokyo language. The best method of communicating with the local people is through Japanese. However, English is also widely spoken. This is mainly due to the presence of a large number of British and American nationals in this city. Moreover, Tokyo is one of the major global cities of the world, which makes English as one of the most common dialects after Japanese. Besides, the signs in the subways and the railway stations are written in Romanized characters or romaji. Katakana is a simple form of the Japanese language and is thus easy to learn. Many of the words are similar to the English languages and hence easy to understand. The script is characterized by short straight strokes with angular curves. In case you are unable to learn this Tokyo language, you can write the names of the places in Japan on a paper and use them to get directions. The dialect however, varies a little from area to area.

Learning some of the terms and phrases will help you to move around the city easily and place orders in restaurants or go for shopping.

Apart from this, the other languages that one gets to hear in Tokyo include Chinese and Korean. This is mainly due to the presence of a Chinese and Korean population in this city. Moreover, as the city also has a number of people belonging to the Philippine nationality, Filipino is also spoken is some small pockets of the city.

Communicating in Tokyo is not difficult. English is widely spoken, which is extremely beneficial for the international tourists.
