Held every year, the Dubai Tennis Championship in UAE is a professional hard-court tennis championship. Organized for both men and women, the Dubai Tennis Championship is sponsored by the Dubai Duty Free Company and takes the patronage of Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai.
The men's event at the Dubai Tennis Championship was started in 1993 when Czech player Karel Novacek won the inaugural tournament. The women's event was recently started in 2001 and the inaugural Dubai Tennis Championship was won by the former World No1, Martina Hingis from Switzerland.
The Aviation Club Tennis Center has been hosting the Dubai Tennis Championship since its inauguration. An important aspect of Sports and Recreation in Dubai, the spectators at the Dubai Tennis Championship can also visit the Irish Village and Century Village inside the premises of the Tennis Center. The Aviation Clubhouse is a classified area and can only be accessed by players and officials.
The main venue, the Dubai Tennis Stadium is located at the heart of the Tennis Center and has an accommodation capacity of 5,000. While not hosting Dubai Tennis Championship, the Stadium is used for concerts and few of the world renowned artists like Sting, Bryan Adams, Asha Bhosle, Shaggy and Vengaboys have performed at the Dubai Tennis Stadium.
