The first office building of Dubai which was fully devoted to administration alone,
Bait Al Wakeel is situated at the abra landing edge of Dubai Creek (Deira side).
Bait Al Wakeel is constructed by late Sheikh Rashid in 1934 following the style
of early 20th century architecture. Renovated completely in 1995, Bait Al Wakeel
is now a museum that exhibits ancient maritime activities and fishing tradition
of the city dwellers.
Sheikh Saeed Al-Makhtoum House, a museum that houses pictures and photographs
of Al-Makhtoum family along generations, is also located at the Dubai Creek
- at the Shindagha waterfront area of the Creek.
Bait Al Wakeel had high importance in the export-import sector of Dubai in
yesteryears. After its construction, Bait Al Wakeel was undertaken by Gray Mackenzie
to house their shipping office. Legend has it that Bait Al Wakeel boasted of
holding the largest living space of the city in this period and the manager
of the company along with his family had the opportunity to occupy this area
for a long period of time. Along with the museum which sketches the ancient
maritime activities and fishing tradition of the city, Bait Al Wakeel at present,
houses a restaurant specialized in seafood with Arabic and Emaratic delicacies.

The description on Bait Al Wakeel would be incomplete without mentioning the
significance of Dubai Creek, the place at which it is located. Fourteen kilometers
long Dubai Creek is a major tourist attraction of the city, though the extent
to which this creek supports foreign exchange and trade may not be fully evident
to a common tourist. Along eight wharfages of the Creek, around 720 thousand
tones of cargo is exchanged with neighboring countries like Iran, Iraq, Somalia,
Yemen and India every year. The Creek can accommodate as many as 31 ships at
one time with a net weight cap of 800 tones.
