Dubai Zoo
United Arab Emirates - Abu Dhabi - Dubai - Sharjah - Al Ain
Located opposite to Jumeirah Beach, Dubai Zoo is comparatively small in its collection of animals, but is the oldest zoo in the city. It shelters some of the unique and endangered species from the animal and plant kingdom, like Barbary Sheep, Socotra Shag, Bengal Tigers, Arabian wolves, Gorillas and Siberian Tigers. In toto, Dubai Zoo shelters approximately 230 species of animals.
Ammotragus Lervia, as the Barbary Sheep is scientifically named, is a kind of goat antelope. Originally from North Africa, this sheep was later introduced to several regions towards the south of Europe.
Socotra Shags or Cormorants are natives of Persian Gulf and the south-east coast of Arabian Peninsula. They have large, voracious, dark-colored and long-necked seabird with a distensible pouch for holding fish. Socotra Shags are perfect display birds as tourists are attracted to gigantic posture and unusual body shape of these birds.
Subspecies of Gray Wolf, Arabian Wolves, as the name suggests, used to rein the Arabian Peninsula. Arabian Wolves are in the category of endangered species as they are at present found in the interiors of Israel, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Arabian Wolves is one of the unique attractions of Dubai Zoo.
Siberian Tigers, also called Amur Tigers, were originally found in the forests of Korea, Manchuria, eastern Asia and northern China. Found mostly in cold and harsh land, Siberian Tigers can be brought up only in extremely low temperatures, but Dubai Zoo has created ideal conditions for the preservation of Siberian Tigers as well as Bengal Tigers.
