Located at the Mouth of Dubai Creek in the Shindagha Area, Heritage and Diving
Village is a display of traditional Arabian lifestyle, customs and traditions.
The Heritage section of this village has a good repertoire of ancient artifacts
- utensils, armory, dresses etc. - which may appear an antithesis to the most
modern art forms of the civilized man.
Heritage village is unique for its barsati homes. Guests can enjoy the lip
smacking traditional Arabian cuisine in an outdoor kitchen attached to this
home. Barsat, which means rain, has been assimilated also to other languages
like Urdu and Hindi. Barsati home, originally means, one room set in the terrace
to ameliorate the mounting pressure for more space in city homes. Barsati home,
with its concept of incremental spacing, runs parallel to the mass housing programs
in the city and is considered an effective housing strategy for the city dwellers.
Before leaving Heritage Village make sure that you've purchased your souvenir
from the small souk in this village of culture and heritage.
Diving Village is a museum of fishing traditions and maritime activities in
erstwhile UAE. Focused mainly on water transport that existed in the ancient
city, Diving Village exhibits dhows (wooden boats), and pearling boats which
have gone into oblivion for a modern city dweller. Free demonstrations of pearl
diving are a part of your Diving Village Journey package. Pearl diving, one
of the traditional professions of the region, is dangerous even when the sea
water is safe and warm. Precaution is taken not to allow pearl diving anytime
before or after the months of April to September. In early years, almost all
the locals of the region were involved in this profession which is now becoming
extinct outside its display before tourists.
