The third largest of the seven states that form the UAE, Sharjah's history goes back to some 6000 years, when Sharjah was being called Sarcoa. One of the popular states of United Arab Emirates, Sharjah forms the cultural hub of the UAE.

At the time of settlement of Sharjah, the population of the state was very less and the main occupation of the people include trade, sea faring, farming, hunting, fishing and pearling. Most of the settlements made in the beginning were based around 'falaj' the man made underground watercourse in Sharjah. Sharjah is the only state in the UAE that have land on both the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. The whole of UAE covers an area of 2,600 sq. km.

Sharjah has some stunning attractions that attract tourists to this place, including huge malls and shopping complexes. Along with these, the beautiful sandy beaches and the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean makes your travel to this destination a haven. You can enjoy diving, fishing and relaxing at this coast for day together without getting bored.

Another attraction near Sharjah is the Al Dhaid, the peaceful 'falaj' based palm oasis in the center of the Emirate. Al Dhaid is popular for its strawberries and many other fruits and vegetables.

The estimated population of Sharjah in mid 2004 was around 678,000. Sharjah offers a warm sunny during daytime from November to April with cool evenings and low humidity. Daytime temperatures range from 18 to 30 degrees C.

Islam is the official religion of UAE and people closely adheres to the tenets of Islam in all aspects. National costume for men is the kandora (dishdasha) that include a long white robe and headdress. Women, on the other hand, wear the traditional Abbaya or black cloak.
