Hung Temple Festival in Hanoi is one of the most royal of the national festivals that celebrate the Hung Kings, whose contribution to the foundation of the nation is revered at. As you witness this festival, you will be impressed by the tangible show of emotive natives of the land, who celebrate their love and heritage of the country almost with the passionate zeal of religious faith.


Located on Nghia Linh Mountain in Hy Lang Commune of Phong Chau District in Phu Tho Province, Hung Temple Festival in Hanoi continues for 3 days from the 9th to the 11th day of the third month as per the lunar calender. The festival is held with a feast of five fruits in Thuong Temple where the royal of Hung dynasty or the Hung Kings performed rituals to worship deities.


Features of Hung Temple Festival in Hanoi


  -   On the tenth day of the second day of the festival, the worship is conducted at Thuong Temple
  -   A flower ceremony is held where all the representatives of the state participate.
  -   The offspring of the Hung kings from across the country come to the temple to offer incense.
  -   A palanquin procession is carried in three villages of Co Tich, Vi Cuong and Trieu Phu in which bamboo elephants and wooden horses are carried
  -   The animals denote surrender of animals to the Hùng kings
  -   Even the officials of the state and youth participate in these processions wearing traditional costumes so that they appear like the children of the Dragon and Fairy.
  -   The processions also consist of other marches like Elephant march
  -   After the procession, Xoan song, a classical song is performed in the Thuong Temple and Ca Tru, a classical opera is held in Ha temple. Even other traditional activities like bamboo swings, nem con or the custom of throwing a sacred ball through the ring, cham thau or beating bronze are carried on.
  -   Cakes like Banh chung (square sticky rice cake) and banh giay (round sticky rice cake) and rice dumpling are distributed in the processions so that the common men remember the Lang Lieu Legend according to which the 18th Hung King was the inventor of these cakes.
  -   The rice dumplings commemorate the contribution of the Hung kings who introduced rice farming. These offerings also remind of the mythical marriage of Mountain Genie and Princess Ngoc Hoa.
