Hanoi National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries

The country of Vietnam has a rich treasure of forests, mountains and green valleys with equal proportions divided between all the major cities. The capital city of Vietnam, Hanoi, basks in pride with its own share of extensive forest areas and lush green lands. With the zeal to protect the wild animals from illegal poaching and preserving the rich bio diversity of the country, the government has assigned special sites to be marked as forested areas for National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries.

The National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries are untouched by human development and pollution and are the best possible natural habitat for animals and birds alike.

Hanoi is undoubtedly a beautiful city and with its French touches is lined with some of the well protected National Parks, lakes and gardens. The Son La Mountains located on the west of Hanoi is notable for its sanctuaries as well as cultural relics. The National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries are all governed nationally from Hanoi and are then put under the charge of respective provincial governments. The area covered is excessively huge and covers areas like Ba Vi in Ha Tay province to Yok Don in Dak Lak province.

The National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries dotting in and around Hanoi consists of:

Cuc Phuong National Park- This National Park was the First National Park of Vietnam and was established in1962. Apart from the rich diversity of flora and fauna consisting of ferns and orchids, the animal kingdom consists of primates like Delacourt's Languor and Cat Ba Languor, butterflies in the Spring season, and a number of rare bird species. The Endangered Primate Rescue Center within the Park caters to the well being of the injured primates.

Ba Be National Park- Located in the Bac Kan province, in the north of Hanoi, this park came into existence in 1992. The beauty of the park is enhanced by three lakes.

Yok Don National Park- It is primarily a dry ecosystem forest with an impressive range of flora and fauna. The area is home to 17 ethnic groups.

Cat Ba National Park- This National Park in Cat Ba Island registers some of the diverse ecosystems in Vietnam. The forest is interspersed by waterfalls and lakes and is inhabited by wild cat, monkeys, boar, and deer.

Bach Ma National Park- This dense forest area is home to a large number of bird species and the wild ox named Sao La. Located near Hue, this evergreen forest also has accommodation facilities and is renowned for its act of preserving ecological balance.

Phong Nha Ke Bang- This National Park was situated 500 km south of Hanoi, in Quang Binh Province and is famed as a world Natural Heritage site by UNESCO. The Park consists of two largest limestone regions in the world. In the year 2005, a group of Botanists discovered a new species of Gecko (lizards) in the park.
Ba Vi National Park- Situated 48 km west of Hanoi, this National Park has an exclusive collection of tropical and sub tropical plant species. The scenic beauty is awesome and the park is a great place to do some bird watching.

Tram Chim National Park- Located in the Dong Thap province, this is a bird sanctuary and covers a lot of area comprising mainly of wetlands. The sanctuary is dominated primarily by the bird population which migrates in large numbers to this sanctuary the most important among which are the rare Red Headed Cranes.
