If you want to shop and at the same time, want to peep into the corridors of
history, then Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi is the place for you. This large
multi- storied market sells anything and everything. From fresh foods to home
appliances, you will have it all here. But, what is more fascinating about this
market is its historical significance which you still can experience if you
visit this place. It witnessed fierce battle between the Vietnamese resistance
units and the French. The French required merchants to bring their goods inside
the fenced boundary of the market in order to facilitate tax collections. When
the number of merchants increased, the market was enlarged. In 1889, a new structure
was built over it and five gates were built leading to it. Each of the five
market gates was used only for specified goods. In 1992, the market was renovated
and a new facade erected. In 1994, the market was gutted by a fire resulting
in the death of five people and the loss of an estimated USD 4.5 million in
stock.
