Vietnam - Hoi An - Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City - Hue
The largest city of Vietnam Ho Chi Minh city is known for its year round festivities. This bustling busy city is a radically different picture during festival seasons. Though the city is the commercial capital of Vietnam and is one of the emerging players in the Asian trade scene the people of the city have not left their roots behind. Traditional festival and ceremonies are still celebrated with gusto here.
One such festival among the many that this city celebrates is the Nghia An Hoi Pagoda Festival. This festival is celebrated in the Nghia An Hoi Pagoda that is dedicated to Quan Cong an eminent Chinese man. Every year the ethnic Chinese community here like the Hoas, the Kinh etc visit this pagoda from various parts of the country to celebrate this festival. This festival is celebrated twice in a year-on the 15th of the 1st lunar month and the 24th of the 6th lunar month.
On the 14th day of the first lunar month, unicorn, lion and dragon dance groups perform in front of audiences in the large grounds in front of the pagoda. It is customary to offer only vegetarian offerings to Quan Cong, though dishes containing meat can be offered to the other spirits.
After the prayer ceremony, various artistic activities are celebrated on the grounds of the pagoda which last for a few nights. This festival is held to commemorate and to show reverence to Lord Quan Cong.
