Mid Autumn Festival Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam - Hoi An - Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City - Hue
The Country of Vietnam is country of myriad festivals. Traditional rituals and ceremonies are intrinsically linked to Vietnamese culture. Ho Chi Minh City is the economic capital of this country and though it is commercially way ahead of the rest of the country, traditional festivities are celebrated lavishly here. In fact business and work rarely comes in way of festivals in Ho Chi Minh City. If you have an interest in the orient and are interested in knowing more about Vietnamese culture then it’s a great idea to time your visit during one of the festivals that are celebrated here. One of the liveliest festivals celebrated in this city is the Mid Autumn Festival.

Also known as the Tet Trung Thu it is a festival that celebrates the autumn moon in the middle of the lunar year. The concept behind this festival is as beautiful as it is heartwarming. This festival is meant for children. In fact it is sort of like the Vietnamese equivalent of Halloween (without the darker connotation of evil spirits that is!) The Mid Autumn Festival is about pure unadulterated fun. This a festival meant for spoiling children rotten. Above all this festival is about love camaraderie and fellow-feeling. The Tet Trung Thu festival is said to have started when parents felt the need to make up for time as they were busy during the harvest season. This festival is celebrated on the 15th of the eighth lunar month. Small children carrying colorful lanterns go on processions throughout the city. Boxes of “moon cakes” are gifted and received and children are spoiled with gifts.

The Mid Autumn Festival is a fabulous time to visit the city. Do visit!
