The mighty Mekong River originates in Tibet and flows through several countries including China, Burma, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia before it starts its 120-mile course through Vietnam. It is here where it divides into nine river mouths to form the aptly named the 9-Dragon River or Mekong Delta.
This delta is populated by 25 million Vietnamese people. The Traditional way of traveling from A to B in the Delta is by boat along a vast network of canals and channels. Boating along these canals and visiting the floating markets always proves to be a fascinating and rewarding experience for all visitors.
The Cai Be Floating market is an interesting floating market in the delta. A lot of families live on boats, buy fruits, rice and flowers from the local farmers and sell it in the Cai Be floating market. The Rice Bowl of Vietnam the Mekong Delta is also known for its exotic tropical fruits and you must try out the exotic tropical fruits available.
A cruise along the Cai Be River to Tan Phong Island and the surrounding small canals is a must. These canals are lined by gardens and farmers’ houses make a great photo and provide an insight into the life along the canals.
The Mekong Delta cuisine is said to be a little different from other places’. Beside the common food the local dishes also comprise of snakes, tortoises, bats, eels. Snake meat and snake wine is a popular part of the cuisine.
