Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City
Vietnam - Hoi An - Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City - Hue
Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the gateway to southern Vietnam. This airport situated around 7 km away from the center of Ho Chi Minh city, is the largest of all the three international airports in Vietnam. Once it was the third busiest airport in the world. It still serves as the most convenient entrance for the tourists, business travelers and others visiting the country. Despite being the most important airport of Vietnam, it lacks basic modern amenities. The airport derived its IATA code SGN, from Saigon, the former name of Ho Chi Minh City.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport dates back to the early 1930s. Initially it was built as a small-unpaved airport called Tan Son Nhat Airfield in Saigon's Tan Son Nhat village, by the French Colonial government. During mid-1956 a 7,200-foot long runway was constructed with the aids of United States. With this added facility the Tan Son Nhat Airfield became the international airport in South Vietnam.
In order to cater the needs of increasing number of air traffics, the Southern Airports Authority of Vietnam has extended the Tan Son Nhat International Airport from time to time. At present there are two separate segments within a single terminal building for domestic and international flights. The current capacity of this terminal amounts to 7 million passengers per year.
