Gia Lac Spring Fair Hue

Vietnam - Hoi An - Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City - Hue
Dinh Vien Cong Nguyen Phuoc Binh - Emperor Gia Long's fourth son, founded Gia Lac market under Minh Mang reign (1820-1840). Initially the usage of the market was confined to the royal family for exchanging goods and for entertainment. However, with the passing of time the activities of the market attracted people in the neighborhood to join in the trade, enlivening it with popular amusements. Therefore, Gia Lac soon became a form of Spring fair on occasions of Tet holidays.

Located on a crossroad close to Nam Pho village, the market forks out in two directions, one toward Duong No, the other toward Ngoc Anh. The market lies 3 km from the city center in the direction of Vi Da. The perfume River flows at a distance of 300 metres from the market. Across from it, on the other bank is the present-day Dinh market.

There is a wide range of goods available for sale at Gia Lac market, which have changed over the years to cater to the needs of the times. Here you will get everything from household utensils, food and drinks to children's toy, it is s type of flea market, one can say.

Gourmets particularly come here to sample its foodstuffs of all kinds, in particular barbecued beef, an indispensable tidbit in the Tet holiday at Gia Lac market.

During the three Tet days the market transforms into an entertainment hub with such games and amusement as "bai choi", "bai thai", "bai ghe". People come dressed up in their best bib and tucker.

You can also come to this fair and be a part of this exhilaratingly cheerful atmosphere when there are no scenes of noisy haggling or quarrelling, but only a fairly concentrated expression of Hue culture.
