Hon Chen Temple Festival Hue

Vietnam - Hoi An - Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City - Hue
The Hon Chen Temple Festival, Hue is a bi-annual festival organized twice every year, in the 3rd and the 7th lunar months. As the name suggests, the festival takes place at the Hon Chen temple, 10 km west of Hue.

The festival begins with a procession referred to as the God Welcoming ceremony; as it is believed that this particular ceremony brings all the worshipped Gods from the village's temples and shrines to the communal house where various rituals are performed, including the procession in honor of Saint Mother Thien Y A Na.

The fact that the procession takes place at night under the moonlit sky adds to the magnificence of the celebration. For the procession a long line of boats are bound together into bigger rafts and set sail on the Perfume River shining with myriad of lights.

Another highlight of the Hon Chen Temple Festival is the special performance filled with imperial characters. In this much-awaited performance, actors dress up in flamboyant attires with splendid turbans and tunics to look like princes and princesses of the Nguyen dynasty.

To add to the genuine feeling of these performances the shows take place in the natural settings of mountains, hills, and rivers. Coming and seeing this Antique Museum of Nature, with a unique mis en scene featuring flags, fans, hammocks, umbrellas, weapons, and much more is an enriching experience for any visitor.
