CULTURE OF THE HUE POPULATION

Formed through the amalgamation of the two major ancient cultures of China and India, the Hue Population traces its origins to the Mongoloid race as far as anthropology is concerned. The inhabitants of Hue belong to a number of the major ethnic minority groups like Tay, Thai, Muong, H'Mong, Dao, and Khmer. Each ethnic group has developed its own language and cultural identity, thereby making the Vietnamese culture a well blended combination of different cultures.

LANGUAGE OF THE HUE POPULATION

The Hue Population follows the official language of Viet, or what is known as Han-Viet ( Chinese-Vietnamese). In the past, Chinese was used as the official written script, but gradually the Vietnamese developed their own script, Chu Nom. However, with the coming of catholic missionaries, there was further development, with a romanced script being used to represent the national language, called Quoc Ngu.

CLOTHING OF THE HUE POPULATION

The Hue Population wears the traditional Vietnamese clothes, which are light, thin, and well-ventilated kind of clothing. Men wear brown shirts and white trousers. Their headgear is simply a piece of cloth wrapped around the head and their footwear consists of a pair of plain sandals. Women wear light brown-colored short shirts with long black skirts. Their headgear consists of a black turban with a crest at the front. On formal occasions, they wear a special three layered dress called ao dai, which is a long gown with slits on either side.
Every ethnic group among the Hue Population has its own fashion of clothing. Over the years, the traditional clothing of all ethnic groups in Vietnam has altered, but each ethnic group has individually preserved their own distinctiveness.
RELIGION OF THE HUE POPULATION

Hue is a multicultural city, with a large number of religion co-existing. The major religions followed by the Hue Population are # Buddhism (which blends forms of Taoism and Confusianism), Christianity (Catholicism and Protestantism), Islam, Cao Daism and the Hoa Hao sect.

OCCUPATION OF THE HUE POPULATION

Hue, being situated on the Perfume River, its major occupation basically is river-based such as fishing. Of course, the government is trying means to generate more occupations for the Hue Population, the most recent being the development of the Tourism Industry which is said to be generating jobs for lakhs of thousands of people.

The Hue Population suffered a great deal during the Viet Cong, and North Vietnam's capture, with a great battle and summary executions and mass killings. Over 2,800 people were found in mass graves, and almost 116,000 of Hue's then population of 140,000 were rendered homeless.

Presently however, the Hue Population has fought the ills that years of war and massacre had brought it, and have risen to make their homeland one of the World Heritage Sites, as has been declared by the UNESCO.
