Tet Doan Ngo Vietnam
Vietnam - Hoi An - Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City - Hue
On the day of the festival of Tet Doan Ngo, Vietnam everyone in the family, be it young or old have to get up early in the morning. They have to eat rice fermented from a few days before the festival, called ‘ruou nep’ and also have fruits. Then they perform prayers at noon during the hour of Ngo. There is no specific explanation of this ritual apart from some age old superstitions and some old tales.
The fermented rice or ‘ruou nep’ is said to purge all diseases from the human body, or any virus that might cause illness in the future. Making the ‘ruou nep’is actually quite easy and is cooked in every household. For 30 minutes the rice is boiled, then rinsed in cool water and heated again. Then it is mixed with yeast and left to sour for 2-3 days. Before being served it is sometimes flavored and medical herbs are added. In recent times however the Vietnamese celebrate Tet Doan Ngo by inviting near and dear ones over to have pudding.
The Tet Doan Ngo, Vietnam is one of the most famous of the Vietnam festivals and events.
