The bed we slept in, the mattress was concave and reminded us of the beds we use in Aged care for people who roll out of bed. It was not comfortable at all and the area we were directed to felt Dungeon like atmosphere - put right out of the way. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the customer service was also very good. So if we book again I will specifically ask that we not be subjected to the 626 area. My soon to be wife and I were both disappointed with the room selection for us, as previous stays were most enjoyable, including my stays working for Bupa Aged Care. The windows were filthy. We probably will stay again but to recommend to other Care Managers it would be with tongue in cheek.

The Menzies is in an extremely convenient locstion being right opposite Wynyard Station, a few minutes walking time to The Rocks, and about 10 mins to the centre of the CBD. The hotel itself has a grand foyer and is warm & welcoming. The twin double room I had was comfortable if a little dated in decor. Bathroom neat and tidy but could have done with a bit of a scrub of the tiles.
My friend & I had the buy-one-get-one-free drink in the Sporters Bar. A good deal, rather noisy with all the sceens showing different sports but a lot of people like that. We enjoyed the pool, spa & sauna. We'd definitely book The Menzies again.

experience of the menzies for over 50
On checking in I was told I had been upgraded to a room in the south wing. Unfortunately this newer wing of the hotel is centrally air conditioned and I was unable to turn the heat down! I requested a move the next day and I was relocated to the older north wing. I was able to control the temperature here! The old rooms are similar to the new wing but the bathrooms are quite dated. Any room facing the park and railway also will get a lot of noise on Friday and Saturday nights. For the price and location of the hotel it's not bad value compared to a lot of others. Most staff were friendly and helpful. The beds are firm and the rooms are quite generous in size.

We have travelled widly through the world and Menzies compares favourably with the best of the best.For the price which was half of what others wanted it was a fantastic deal. We did have problems with their key card,very modern but suseptible to vagaries of computor technology. We had two rooms,we used and left rooms together the two days of our stay,yet one room was not cleaned when we returned at midnight on first day. Then on departure we paid at reception and asked for porter service for bags from room to car,this took half an hour and was only acomplished when we asked porter direct.

Great access to the rail, buses and...
Great access to the rail, buses and taxi's. Very central to the Rocks, CBD, Wharfs and walking distance to tourist sites. Staff very helpful and professional.

The staff were friendly and extremely helpful and the standard of the public rooms and the food at breakfast were good. However, we were given two different rooms (as we asked to be changed to a non-smoking room) and both were extremely dingy and dark as the window faced onto the inside of a tall, very narrow tower and was like looking into a lift shaft. We had a standard room so possibly a de luxe room would have been different. The main complaint was the standard of the bathroom which was badly in need of refurbishment with a very worn bath and taps and grout coming away from the tiles. The other gripe was the cleanliness of the corridor - the edges of the carpet had obviously not been vacuumed for WEEKS. This should be the job of the housekeeper to keep an eye on.

The staff were all very helpful, however...
The staff were all very helpful, however I would recommend this hotel for short stay only, there was only limited storage facilities for clothes in the room ie 1 small wardrobe with no draw space. We had breakfast only one day,ate out the remainder of the stay.. This hotel is beginning to look tired. (stayed in this hotel 8 years ago, does not appear to have been upgraded since)
